Cleaner Air: A Multi-Emissions Approach

Cleaner Air: A Multi-Emissions Approach

Overview
The improvement in America’s air quality over the past 30 years has been remarkable and more can be done to further improve our environment while ensuring that our nation continues to have a reliable and affordable electricity supply.

Currently, there are a number of legislative initiatives in the U.S. Congress that seek to reduce sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and mercury air emissions. Some initiatives also target reductions in carbon dioxide (CO2).

As these initiatives are being debated, it is important for Americans to know some important facts:

  • Under the current Clean Air Act electric companies have reduced sulfur dioxide emissions by over 40 percent and nitrogen oxides emissions by nearly 40 percent. The air we breathe today is much cleaner than just a few years ago.
  • Stringent emission caps and timeframes will push electricity generators away from using coal toward more expensive energy sources.
  • The U.S. is in the midst of a natural gas crisis because constrained supplies are not keeping up with demand resulting in high natural gas prices.
  • Higher energy costs will harm consumers, manufacturers, businesses and farmers and be an overall negative force on our economy.

Using the links on the left, you can learn more about a multi-emissions approach to cleaner air. Once you have the facts, you need to write your legislators and let them know that you want cleaner air without higher electricity prices, negative economic consequences and reduced energy security.
