Energy Costs: The Lifeblood of America's Economy

Energy Costs
Lower energy costs in the United States give American businesses a competitive advantage. Energy costs are one of the major determinants of the competitiveness of a business. America's energy costs are low compared to other nations. America's energy costs have actually dropped over the past several years. Since 1980, electricity prices, adjusted for inflation, have declined more than 24 percent lowering overall energy costs.

Energy costs are less expensive in the United States because energy producers pay less for fuel to generate electricity. One of the reasons they pay less is because abundant, inexpensive coal makes lower energy costs possible. Electricity from coal results in energy costs that are half the cost of natural gas fired generation. Since 1979, the energy costs of coal-based electricity generation has increased just 4 percent.

Mandates that require each electric supplier to generate a certain percentage of electricity using renewable energy sources will increase energy costs.
