Energy and
the Environment
The
coal-based energy industry has a strong commitment to balancing
energy and the environment
and to producing energy that is increasingly clean within the
environment. America's energy generators have invested tens of
billions of dollars in advanced energy technologies to improve
the environment and quality of the air over the past 20 years.
In addition, each year energy generators spend between $1.3 and
$3.3 billion on energy and environmental practices (e.g., operation
and maintenance). While this figure includes spending on all types
of energy and environment controls, a significant portion is related
to air emissions.
This investment
in energy and the environment
has paid off. Between 1980 and 2001 (the last year data were available)
the rate of emission of sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxide (NOX),
and particulate matter (PM-10) from electricity from coal has
dropped. The SO2 emission rate has dropped 38 percent, the NOX
emission rate has dropped 32 percent, and the PM-10 emission rate
has dropped 25 percentimproving America's energy and environment.
