Iowa
 |
 |
| Iowa has the 18th lowest retail electricity prices in
the nation. The 2000 state average rate of $58.50/MWh was 13 percent
below the national average retail rate. Iowa power rates are relatively
low because of high proportion of low cost coal generation. These units
enjoyed very low delivered coal costs ($0.88/MMBtu) and provided 84
percent of in-state utility generation. Iowa ranked tenth in coal market
share. Iowa's low generating costs are partially offset by the higher
distribution costs from feeding primarily rural areas. With its low
generating costs, Iowa's utility deregulation activities are behind
most states. |
