Illinois

Illinois has the 20th highest retail electricity prices in the nation. The 2000 state average rate of $65.80/MWh was 2 percent above the national average retail rate. Illinois power rates are high because of their very high nuclear investment ($17.6 billion). Some primarily coal-based utilities have much lower rates that are well below the national average. However, only 46 percent of in-state utility generation comes from coal-fired stations.
