Kansas

Kansas has the 26th lowest retail electricity prices in the nation. The 2000 state average rate of $62.60/MWh was 7 percent below the national average retail rate. Being a Midwestern rural state, Kansas has relatively high distribution costs and low cost coal generation. In 2000, 73 percent of in-state utility generation was from coal-fired stations. These stations had delivered coal costs of only $0.98/MMBtu. Kansas's $1.4 billion nuclear investment also pushed rates higher.
