The Results
are Clear Technology Works
This investment
has paid off. Between 1980 and 2001 (the last year data were available)
emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOX), and particulate
matter (PM-10) from electricity from coal have dropped.
- The SO2
emission rate has dropped 38%.
The NOX emission
rate has dropped 32%.
The PM-10 emission rate has dropped 25%

- Over
time, as new technologies are deployed and continually proven
effective, the cost of these technologies will be reduced
substantially. For example, the U.S. Department of Energy
estimates that technologies currently being developed are
likely to reduce the cost of carbon sequestration from the
current estimated cost of $300 per ton of carbon to $10 per
ton per ton of carbon by 2015.
